"Option Delete does not delete previous word

I'm transition from Mac Eudora 6.1 to Entourage 2004. So far, so good.

I have the following problem:

Entourage 2004 does not recognize "option delete" to delete the word
immediately to the left of the cursor. It simply backspaces.

Word 2004 (as well as most of my other OS X apps) recognize option
delete to delete the previous word.

I have tried this in Ent2004 with the pref setting for using Office
keyboard shortcuts on and off, with no difference.

I really miss option delete!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Look, you asked for suggestions. What were you expecting? I don't think
you're going to get a non-kludge answer because this feature is simply not
in Entourage.

Another is to write a script that performs these two actions and assign a
single keystroke to it.

Sorry, didn't meant to step on your toes. I did say "thanks." The info
that E 2004 does not support option delete" is what I was looking for.

Another is to write a script that performs these two actions and assign a
