Organizing downloads and uploads pages

I hav a password protected (multiple passwords) download folder. Where
should the index of downloadable files be? Should it be an Index.html in the
same folder, or a link somewhere else?

I'm not necessarily looking for what's possible, but for "best practice"
type advice. Thanks.

Depends...
I have the index to secured downloadable files in its own subweb, with the
files contained in a subweb of that subweb. This enables the downloadable
files to be maintained by FTP without breaking FP extensions in the rest of
the web.

A few questions first. 1) Is this a static download index? or is it to be
created on the fly? 2) What do you want the list to look like? A page or
a drop download list?
3) Are you using frames? Question 2 is real important. What do you WANT it
to look like. Best practice usually is wrapped arround the needed result so
the customer is happiest.
