OT- Microsoft’s .NET

E

Erika

I'm asking here because I'm among friends :)

I have disapled Active X scripting on my IE browser to reduce possible
hacking exploits. I've avoided any apps that use Msft Net because I
don't understand it and I've been leery of it. I don't even use an RSS
reader yet but I think I'd like to give it a try. (Technology is passing
me by!) Can anyone here reassure me that .NET is safe and give me some
comments or links to references to read more? Thanks!!

Yes, it's all good. I've been a .net developer for like 3 years now. I'd be
surprised if you don't have the .net framework installed already. Basically
what goes on your machine is the .Net CLR, the runtime files that support
.Net applications.
I don't know of any pages that aren't geared to the developer such as
www.gotdotnet.com and http://www.msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/ - but you
can just search the Microsoft site. RSS is nothing to be afraid of, I myself
implemented an RSS feed on www.barvin.com . I personally recommend
www.rssreader.com as an easy to use and free reader. As for the topic of
ActiveX controls, use of those is largely ancient history, and I haven't
seen a browser lately that doesn't have that off by default. If you had to
do it manually perhaps you are using old software. So to that I say, if you
aren't on Windows XP SP2 and IE 6+ then you are missing out.
I'm pretty certain I don't have the .net framework installed. I know RSS
is nothing to be afraid of. I was questioning .net.

I'm using win-ME but i do have ie6. Won't move to xp until i get the new
'puter :)

Thanks for your comments, David.

I tried the msft ME newsgroup and they didn't help me and quickly lost
interest. Here's where things stand:
Hi. I have win-ME and IE 6 and a 4 year old computer. I'm ready to bite the bullet and install .net framework on my computer but I can't use the windows update feature. When I get to the right place, it says:

When I click start, there is no option to click Windows Update or Product Update. When I try it on the internet from this URL http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;299597&spid=6519&sid=1020
I get to a page that ask for admin rights (?) or also tells me to click windows update.

I'm going in circles and don't know what to do. Appreciate some help! Thanks!!
answer:

I cannot get to Windows Update. Any help, people? Thanks!!!

No expert, but, you appear to have a comma (') in the above url's between
'windowsupdate' and 'microsoft etc'. Any chance these should be a full stop
(.)?

That comma was in the answer the other people gave me. Of course you are
right and it doesn't work as a URL that way. Nevertheless once I get to
the correct place I still can't access the update.
