does anyone out there have the answer? I need to be away for some time
and just want to let people know I'm not ignoring them. This is where
I'm at OSX 10.3.9 Entourage v 10.1.4. .....Any suggestions???

If you have Exchange, you can set this up through OWA directly (I
believe it's somewhere in the options on the web page). Entourage
doesn't have a front end for that.

Without Exchange, the only option I see is to let Entourage running and
to create a rule that sends replies back just like the Out of Office
assistant.
Be careful to exclude discussion lists and mails coming from yourself to
avoid endless feedback loops ;-)

I'm sure this question gets asked constantly, but any idea when this feature
will be incorporated into Entourage? While I'm on the subject, any news
about the next major release of Mac Office?

It _is_ incorporated into Entourage - that's one thing that rules are for!

Hum... not really Barry... ;-) The Exchange Out Of Office setting is not
accessible from Entourage directly. This is a server-side feature that
works even when Entourage is not running and you currently need to set
it up from OWA.

....and to answer the question: a lot of people asked for it and no one
knows whether it'll ever bee integrated in Entourage.

Yes it is... ;-)

Agreed, but the OP never mentioned Exchange, and far more people use
Entourage without exchange than with it.

Agreed :)

Your response was right on - rules are not the same thing as the Out of
Office Assistant, for the reasons you state. I would expect that Barry being
an MVP would be able to discern that difference.

Anyway, thanks for the information.

Barry knows the difference :) What he says is not off base either since
you didn't originally mention Exchange. His solution works just fine for
people using regular e-mail servers like POP and IMAP.

I'm starting to wonder about that... I wonder what the actual figures
are. It looks like a fair number of corporations and universities have
implemented Exchange now and more and more people around me seem to be
using it...
The fact is: Entourage is the only Exchange client for Mac out there
(whereas people have numerous other choices for POP and IMAP).

The same thing? No, never. Rules are far more powerful than a simple OoF
function.

However, an OoF function can be made with a rule (as described here:

Ergo, I stand by my statement that OoF capability is built in to Entourage.
What isn't built in is a way to manipulate rules _on_the_server_, but I
would submit that that is an extra that not many email clients provide.
