Outline Numbering problems

J

Joel

I went through the tutorial on Shuana Kelly's web site which was
helpful.
I set up the Headings to use outline numbering.
I set the font to Arial Bold 12 pt.
However I want the text (I think you call this the body?) following the
heading to have a different font.
Also I am having problems with the whole paragraph showing up in the
Document map and TOC instead of just the heading. If I try to apply a
different style to the body it also applies it to the heading and
deletes the numbering.

Thanks - Joel

It sounds like you're trying to use run-in headings. For this you need two
separate paragraphs, one in your heading style and one in Body Text style
(with a different font). Set the Body Text style to be the "Style for
following paragraph" of the heading; then see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RunInSidehead.htm. This will solve your
DM problem as well.

Suzanne,

Thanks for tip, but I am still confused. After I type in the numbered
heading line, I can hit Enter but then I get another numbered heading
line. Then I can hit Backspace to delete this line and start typing the
body text but it is not aligned with the heading. If I hit shift-enter
then I can start typing the body text and it is aligned but it is part
of the heading style which was the cause my original problems.

Thanks again - Joel

Ok if I do this I get what I want:

After I type in the numbered
heading line, I can hit Enter but then I get another numbered heading
line. Then I can hit Backspace to delete this line and start typing the

body text but it is not aligned with the heading.

Its just that I have to make a different body text style with a
different left indent for each level of numbering so that it aligns
with the heading. I am not sure if this the easiest way to accomplish
this its seems kind of messy.

If you are getting another outline-numbered heading when you press Enter,
then you have not set your Body Text style as the "Following style" for the
heading style. You must apply a different style (whether automatically or
through the Styles dropdown).

Suzanne,

Ok that works fine, except the body text still does not align with the
heading. As I go deeper into the heading level, the headings indent
further but the body text does not. Is there a way to make the body
text automatically align with the identing of the various heading
levels?

Thanks - Joel

I found that if I use a different Body Text style for each heading
level I can adjust the identation for each style to match the
indentation of the heading level. Its a little work but not too bad.

Have a look at the List Number and List Continue style series. These show
the relationship of corresponding numbered and unnumbered styles. Note also
that often you can use a line break rather than a following style.

Suzanne,

I really appreciate your help! I am an Enginer and I always struggled
with Word and did not have much interest in learning how to use it more
efficiently. Now I know in the future it will much easier and faster
thanks to your help.
