Outlined (not red) Flag on folder

I just unflagged the last message in a folder, but the flag icon on the
folder (on the left, on the main page, showing whether there are ANY flagged
messages in that folder) now instead of disappearing is showing a clear
outline of a flag (like a flag shadow). Anyone know what that means? If I
filter for only flagged messages in that folder, there are none.

It means a sub-folder of that folder contains a flagged message. Toggle it
open and you'll see.
