Outlook 2000 email InBox preview window and risk of virus

Hello -
I have constant battles with my IT group and have received the following statement from them...

you're using the "preview" feature on your inbox...again. you can use it on ANY other folder, just not the inbox...some viruses can be activated immediately from that preview feature.

I have been using this feature for more than 4 years and have never had an instance of a virus entering in this manner - do any of you know if this is true or not???

It is true, if Outlook is not properly patched. It's also true no matter
which folder uses the preview pane. If your IT folks haven't patched
Outlook to prevent the preview pane from running virus-laden HTML, then
SHAME ON THEM, not one you.
