Outlook 2000 Preview Pane Freezing

B

Badmug

Using Outlook 2000 with WIN98. Have had a few issues over the years but
nothing I couln't resolve myself. This one has me stumped. A message
arrived in my Inbox a month ago that caused my whole system to freeze (it's
already dowloaded off the server but freezes the machine when the preview
pane attempts to open). I have opened the email in question, without issues,
using Outlook Express but that doesn't delete it from Outlook. It is the
first message in my Outlook Inbox so it freezes everything into a
ctrl-alt-del situation and renders Outlook unusable. I have tried
uninstall/reinstall, etc. to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions or new
things to try and get this damn spam message out of my inbox so I can quit
using my email's web interface as my sole means of checking my mail? Thanks
in adavance.

Does your outlook switch to your inbox on every start and immediately
your system freezes?
Start oulook with the parameter /select Outlook:Calendar

Start | Run | outlook.exe /select Outlook:Calendar

Now outlook's calendar appears on startup. Go to

Tools | Send/Receive

to receive some new mails. Now switch to your inbox, press the shift key
on your keyboard and mark the mails before and one after the corrupt
mail and press the del-key.

Thanks for the help and I think you've got me headed in the right direction
although I need you to be a bit more specific. I am familiar with computer
stuff but not to a great extent. What do I need to do to change outlook to
open with the calendar instead of the inobx without first having to open
outlook? I cannot even open outlook from my desktop or anywhere else without
it opening to the stuck mail in my inbox. How do I get "behind" having to
open the .exe file?

Send a mail to your own account (use another email program or web
frontend of your provider) prior you start outlook.

Then go to (Desktop)

Start | run |

and type following:

outlook.exe /select Outlook:Calendar

Click on the OK-Button and now outlook starts with the calendar instead
the inbox.

Now try to do this what I have written in my first posting.

Problem resolved and THANK YOU so much! I knew I needed someone to think
the issue through from a different angle. The only other issue I have been
having with Outlook for some time is the inability to create any new
Contacts. I have a fairly extensive contact list now (maybe 100 or so) all
in the same folder. However, when I bring up Contacts and click New, it
allows me to fill in all the Contacts details but doesn't allow me to Save
and Close (that button is missing). When I choose File|Save, Outlook tells
me it has performed an illegal operation and must be shut down. The details
are as follows: OUTLOOK caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:01b44277. Any clue on how to resolve this? Thanks
again for the help on purging the bad mail. At least it's functional to the
point it is now!

I tried renaming the frmcache file to frmcache.old and it did not resolve the
issue. I assume all I needed to do to rename the file was right
click-rename? That is what I did. Any other suggestions?

Did you stop and restart Outlook?
