SOLVED!
I selected the contacts folder, then went into the
settings for the contacts (File | Folder | Properties for
Contacts) (or just right-click on Contacts folder and
select Properties.)
Then I went to the Outlook Address Book tab and checked
the box "Show this folder as an Email Address Book."
After that I could search successfully again.
