Outlook 2002 won't accept email addresses imported from Access db

Outlook 2002 will not accept email addresses imported to contacts from an
Access database?
Outlook 2000 works ok. Why?

define 'won't accept' - do they import but are not resolved or won't import
at all?

The Access database contains only 3 fields, first names, surnames and email
addresses. The first names and surnames import into 'Contacts', but only
the first letter of the email address.
