Outlook 2003 and Imap - How to Stop Outlook from Automatically Downloading Messages?

Will someone using Imap and Outlook 2003 tell me if you can see of a
way to stop Outlook from automatically downloading messages. So far after
many hours of trial I have it down to just downloading the selected message.

I want to prevent it from downloading any messages unless I double
click on the header indicating that I want the message. When I see messages
that I know are virus infested, to delete the message, outlook locks up
until it has downloaded the message. Then it allows me to do the action.
However, I would like to be able to do the action before it downloads the
message.

After selecting the message I want to delete, fortunately my Virusscan
program alerts me after the message is downloaded. However, this is only
because I have the newest updates. If a hacker creates a virus that my scan
program misses, then my computer will be affected.

I spent the whole weekend trying to figure out how to stop the messages
from being downloaded. This is the second message I'm writing to get
someone to help me with the problem. Actually it would be a help if someone
would check and tell me if this is a bug in the program, and the developers
forgot to include the option to prevent downloading the messages. If I knew
this, I could stop trying to find something that doesn't exist, then start
working on the developers to fix the bug.

Thanks in advance for anyone with input.
