I have something of the same problem when I use Word to send to email, not as an attachment. My one solution that I just
stumbles acroos today...Do the three fingered salute to see how many process of Outlook are running. I've found 3-4 usually. Kill one or all of the processes. Without closing Word, start Outlook and hit Send/Receive. So far that works but it's a royal pain.
