Outlook 2003 email 'save as' msg not readable Isys, Powerdesk

Have archived Outlook 2003 emails as msg files. Isys,
Powerdesk Pro 5, Universal Explorer 4 are all unable to
read/view these files. Outlook 2000 files OK. Unicode
message format option in 2003 is off. Msg files will open
and read in Outlook.
Really don't want to archive in text format.
Suggestions for cause and/or solution would be most
welcome.
