Outlook 2003 FREEZES every time.

Using Outlook03 w/ Office2K, Win2KPro, dial up, program
configured to poll for new mail every 3 hours and to ask
permission before dialing due to conflicts on phone line.

I share a dial up phone line with two other people and a
fax machine. I cannot permit Outlook to dial out anytime
it wants to.

The last couple versions of Outlook have tried to dial out
immediately anytime anything is in the outbox. Prior to
2003 I could just drop the box to the task bar and
continue.

With 2004, the dial out box re-appears every few seconds
and the reading pane and several other features freeze or
slow down drastically unless I let the dial up proceed. In
addition, it takes the focus without warning and if I'm
typing a message without looking, I can accidently
scramble the POP server userid and password. Since these
are random groups of characters, it takes a while to look
it up and re-enter.

When I say I want the program to send AND RECEIVE every 3
hours, that's what I mean. Outlook used to work this way
but the last few versions MS seems only to care about
corporate users on large bandwidth "always open"
connections.

Just on the chance that I've missed a setting somewhere,
does anyone know of a work around to this problem.

It's bad enough that I'm ready to abandon Outlook 2004 and
go back to Outlook 2K but that would be a big hassle and
the feature to display all reading panes as text only has
cut the amout of spam I get drastically.
