outlook 2003 hangs when opening attachements

Ive googled this and tried a few things already, but nothing so far has
worked. The sys is an XP PRO SP3 box. 4 Gigs RAM. . 1 Gbit NIC connected to
exchange server.

I have done detect and repair, created new profile, got all updates, and
played around with some startup switches. Nothing so far has worked.

Any Ideas?

I have the same problem with attachments and also Outlook hangs when I click on a link embedded in the email message. These problems just began very recently. Looking for help on this, please.

Problem solved:

It was a bad external USB HD. Apparently the I/O errors generated by the
drive was causing some sort of conflict with opening email's with
attachments in Outlook.

Never would have guessed that in a million years.
