Outlook 2003. opens, but then stops.

I recently purchased office 2003, and updated my old office
xp. after doing this, everything seems to be fine, except
for outlook. it will open, but then, no matter what, within
a minute, my computer is completely frozen. sometimes it
freezes in the middle of checking an email, some times it
doesnt even get that far, some times it checks my emails,
but if i actually try to do anything, it simply doesnt
work.
microsofts customer support page takes you in circles
(beautifully designed, i'm sure, to discourge even the most
avid seeker).
when i open outlook, but basically acts as if my computer
simply cant handle it. unless, however, outlook 2003 is the
most enourmous program ever created, i doubt this to be the
case. my computer isnt top of the line, but 6 months ago it
was, so it isnt too freaking shabby. P4 2.66 GHz with 1Gig
or RAM should be able to handle outlook.
i have even tried completely uninstalling, and
reinstalling, but that didnt have any effect either.

anyone have any ideas on what it might be?

Does Outlook start in safe mode? (start | run | outlook.exe /safe | ok
button) If yes, try renaming/deleting the file named outcmd.dat. If it is
still botched at this point, try creating a new mail profile via the mail
applet in the control panel and delete the old one.

outlook did open in safe mode.
however, there are no .dat files on my computer by the name
that you gave.

thank you for your help so far.

hmm... it should be there. did you configure windows explorer (and or the
search if using windows xp) to show you all hidden/system folders?

well... it showed me every other .dat file on my computer
(a lot of them, at least)... so i assume it is set up to
show hidden files.. but i'll have to look in to it deeper

It's the folders that are hidden, not necessarily the files themselves.

okay..
i set it up so that i can see all hidden files and folders.
and i am still not finding this file.
the only files i have that start with "out" are...
"OUTFORM.dat" and "OUTLFLTR.dat"

How about extend.dat and frmcache.dat -- do you have those? If so, rename
or delete them.

Also, it would be helpful if you could quote the previous replies so I can
keep track of what's already been said in this thread -- I hide previously
read messages in my newsreader so I can't see what we talked about before.
