Outlook 2003 (part of MS Office) - deleting messages from inbox

DH has a new computer. HP laptop, Windoze XP Professional version. MS
Office 2003 including Outlook.

When he deletes a message from his inbox, Outlook merely draws a line
through it; i.e., it doesn't remove the header info from the Inbox. He
wants it GONE from his inbox. How do he make that happen? I'm tired
of listening to him bitch about it. Is there a Preferences window
where he can futz with things? If the lined-through stuff goes away
when he shuts down either machine or Outlook, is there a way to make it
go away from the inbox before that? Save My Marriage!!! --

You're using IMAP to connect to your server (or rather he is). There's no
way to make these messages go away instantly. However, you can choose Edit,
Purge Deleted Messages and that will purge all messages with a line through
them.

IMAP is the only type of mail server that has the behavior you described.
POP3 or Exchange servers delete the message immediately. IMAP operates
differently.

Hmm. Is a POP3 server an option for Outlook? I'm wondering why
Earthlink would put him on an IMAP server instead of the POP3. MY
Earthlink account is on a POP3 server. Might this be because Earthlink
wants him using their mail service/app rather than Outlook's? Da bums.
I think he'll be back with them to see if they can hook him up with a
POP3. Thanks again. -Barb

Whoops, I erred.
Looks like his Earthlink account in on a POP3 server; it's a University
account that's on the IMAP server.
I think I'm getting out of his problem. Thanks for all your help,
