Outlook 2007 / IE 7 / Vista 32 Ultimate / Hotmail / KB 904942

Windows Vista doesn't need that patch.

What is the exact error you receive?
Do you have a paid Hotmail subscription?

I'm not getting an error. I'm getting prompted multiple times for my
password ("Enter your user name and password for the following server.") when
I attempt to check my Hotmail account using Outlook 2007 on a Windows Vista
Ultimate 32-bit notebook. Sometimes the password field is populated (with
dots, so I cannot verify the correct info is saved), sometimes the password
field is blank. I keep entering or re-entering the passord and checking the
"Remember Password" box each time I am prompted, but the prompts persist. I
have yet to be able to download all the messages (I want a copy of each for
offline use) associated with my account.

It appears this exact behavior was previously reported using Outlook 2003
and Outlook 2007 after installation of IE7 on XP and 2003
workstations/servers, and was successfully addressed by the patches linked
from KB904942. You say that Vista does not require the patch, but my
scenario would seem to indicate otherwise. I'm not interested in paying
another $50 to MS to solve this, thus the post. Hopefully, there is another
approach that will work.

Yes, I have a paid Hotmail subscription, and have been paying for years.

I used to simply use Outlook Express, but now Windows Mail does not support
Hotmail accounts. A bit discouraging.

Thank you for your assistance.

Unfortunately, the patches provided are only for XP and 2003. I need one
for Vista ASAP, as this behavior is very counterproductive.

Is this a clean install of Vista and Outlook or were they updated from a
previous version?

You might experience the same symptoms but note that the patch was issues a
good half year before Vista got released ;-)

It is a clean OEM install on a brand new Dell XPS M1710. Part of Office 2007
Professional.

I can appreciate that the patch was released some time ago, but I also know
that different versions of some MS patches have been "held back" in the past
because they have conflicted with other programs or services. Those are
typically only available by directly contacting MS Support. If such a patch
is available, then I would gladly put forth the effort to make that contact.

I am an MCSE+I on NT, MCSE on 2000 & 2003. I understand how MS works,
better than most. In this case, I simply am searching for any known cure to
what may be a known but unpublished problem.

Thanks again.
