Outlook Express 6 - attachments and spell check

Under Windows XP, and Works 7.0, in 'in box', can see
(faintly) but cannot open e-mail atachments. And in 'new
document', can see spell check button, but canot activate
spell check, even though it is present in WPS. Help,
please
