Outlook Express hangs when loaded with Works&xp

Really frustrated by new PC loaded with Windows xp which
includes Outlook Express, which I really need to use
linked to hotmail. OE seems to work on its own, but as
soon as I load Works ( just word and the encyclopaedia)
onto the PC it always comes up 'Do you want to Go
offline, Try again.' Sometimes OE works after a fashion,
but outgoing mails sit in the outbox, meanwhile it keeps
trying to download emails, until you close it. The work
offline box always comes back ticked, even when you
untick it.

Having got into OE once from each logon, it wont then
open again from the desktop. You have to log off, at
which point it puts up a box saying Ending Programme -
O. I have tried loading the Works first, then
connecting up -- no joy.

Any ideas?
