outlook is for pop email

Joanne

When I try to use Outlook on my WinXP Pro machine running office 2003
to get my email or send email, I get this message whenever I click on
send/receive:

The Operation Failed. Object could not be found.

Been trying to solve the problem. Using MS knowledgebase article
#312354 that addresses the problem was of no help at all. Did as
instructed in the article, but I keep bouncing out saying my user name
or password is not correct, but they are correct.

Came across this statement from the microsoft.public.outlook newsgroup
while trying to find the answer to my problem, and I am wondering if
what Mary is addressing here is my problem:

..... Outlook is for POP mail, not web mail.

Am I trying to get pop mail from a web mail site? It is a company run
site, and my email address is [email protected] - does the fact that
I need to use what seems to be a web url address indicate that it is
web mail?

If that is my problem I can't do anything about it I guess, but then I
have another question. I am wanting to use Outlook 2003 because I use
macros to gather my attachments (on hundreds of emails). Will those
macros work in Outlook Express 6? As it is now, I gather my email
using Outlook Express 6, then export messages to Outlook 2003 so I can
use my macros. Not a killer big deal but would be nice if I could use
a more direct method.

Anyway, thanks for your time and consideration of my problem and any
light you can shed on it.

Thanks for you time and efforts.
I went to the suggested site - loads and loads of info Whew1
Not real sure if I am understanding correctly, but it seems to me that
in order to use Outlook 2003 direct with my email account I have to
purchase a license for MS Exchange? Is this correct?

If it's the company you work for, then your Exchange Admin should be able to
tell you how to access Outlook Web Mail for your Company Mailbox.

State what type of account you've tried to define and what you've entered
for the POP/SMTP server values, the port values, and so on.

Thank you so much for offering your help and expertise.

Here is what I have Done
MSOutlook 2003 SP1, WinXP Pro
Tools/Email Accts/Add a new email account/Next
Pop3 (Server Type)
Fill in user info, server info, logon info
Test Acct Settings fails because
1. Server was found, but no response. Verify port and SSL info is
correct
2. Cannot accept user name or password (Which i have verified as
correct)
3. Find outgoing smpt svr but problem with svr name or port or svr may
not support ssl.

Under advanced it requires me to know if
My outgoing svr (SMTP) requires authentication
I connect using my LAN (not sure is this is correct)
and Incoming svr (POP3) is 110, and wants to know if ssl required
Outgoing svr (SMTP) is 25, also does it require ssl?

This info requested is beyond my expertise and I don't know how I am
to find the correct answers to these questions. My administrator,
perhaps?

Thanks for your help. I hope this is the correct info for you.

You mention that you have an administrator. Did that person tell you to use
a POP account and give you the values you should enter for the server names?
That's the person who would know.

Either you've entered the server name(s) incorrectly, it's not a POP (or
SMTP, as appropriate) server, or you have a network problem. If this is not
a home environment, you should speak to your IT people.

If it's not dial up, it's probably a LAN.

Absolutely.
