Outlook & O. Express trying to run at the same time?

[I posted this under the category Installation as well--
maybe that wasn't the right spot so I'm trying here.] In
installing a cable connection with the cable company's
self-install software (which includes Outlook Express for
e-mails), my Outlook 2000 now cannot retrieve e-mails or
anything else. It churns and chugs and rumbles and
freezes. Not only does Outlook freeze, but calendar
freezes as well when calendar reminders come up. We
initially just tried to manually configure Outlook to the
cable company parameters, had a couple of problems, the
little cable tech dude couldn't help us, and then we
thought maybe we should go through the complete
installation with the cable company's CD. We know now we
shouldn't have done that! We believe both Outlook Express
and Outlook 2000 are trying to work at the same time
causing the chugging and churning and freezing. I have
about 30 seconds to jump into Outlook to retrieve an e-
mail address, before I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL Outlook as
it's not responding. [This happened a couple of years ago
when we installed Windows ME. We trashed Windows ME and
Outlook has been fine since.]

Should we uninstall Outlook Express? [I have since
learned that Outlook needs Outlook Express' files?]
Should I back-up my e-mail files first? From previous
posts, it sounds like I won't lose anything . . . . I
don't know what parameters to use to search the newsgroups
or patches pages or whatever for fixes to this problem.

I've never, ever been able to find Outlook mail files but
thanks to previous posts in this newsgroup, I've found the
following: http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
This should help. Thanks much.
