outlook wont send or receive until I clear inbox

I have a client, installed win2k and office 200 on his
machine myself. Outlook stops sending or receiving after
his inbox (or anything related to it, i.e. not in a pst
file) gets to be certain size. We arent talking gigabytes
here, just lots of junk mail. In order to start sending
and receiving he must clear out his trash and inbox. It
was doing the same thing when he was running office 2000
form win98, and I thought it was just a conflict. Any
ideas? I am desperate!! PS, when this phenomenom occurs,
his incoming mail, is bounce back to the sender. this
doesnt make sense to me, he has an earthlink account. Can
outlook reject mail send back auto replys? I dont think
so, I would think earthlink is doing this.

thanks for any info
