Outlook XP not holding password

I'm using Office XP (2002) Pro, and it has all the latest patches
including service pack 3. (The problem began before SP3 was
installed.)

The problem is, Outlook won't save the password. I can put the mail
password in, make sure "save password" is checked (un- and recheck it
for good measure,) and as soon as I close Outlook and reopen it, it's
gone.

I've tried the "repair" utility found in the "Help" drop-down, and as
I said, I patched it up to SP3.
What else can I check or do?

is a well documented problems that has been mentioned several times on this
board.
