overdue notice shuts down outlook

The client side is Outlook 2000 running on Windows 2000 Professional. The server side is Exchange 2000. (But I don't think this is related to the server). I open the mailbox and about 30 seconds later over 60 overdue reminders run, completely taking over the processor. In order to clear them off, I have to shutdown Outlook. Any ideas
