OWA required for Entourage?

I'm in the middle of a major network upgrade that will include upgrading
Exchange. When that's finished, I would like to move my Mac OS 10.3.5
clients to Entourage (from Outlook). I've read however, that Entourage
requires OWA... Can this be true? Even Outlook 2003 for Windows doesn't
require this service and I'm not particularly keen on OWA in my environment.

Can anybody tell me if this is true?

Yes, it is true. Entourage uses WebDAV to access Exchange-specific features.

You could leave OWA off and enable IMAP instead; but you lose server-based
contacts, calendars, and other Exchange features.
