Page Numbers not showing. Items selected in Master-but greyed out

We can't see to get the page numbers to appear on the slides. We have done
the View headers and footers stuff and made the correct selections. So we
thought hmmm. and checked the Master. We don't see them appearing there
either, but when we go to layout, all the boxes are check marked- but greyed
out and not allowing us to make changes....but since they are checked...why
wouldn't they be appearing on the slides? Even in print preview?

Are the actual place holders there for the page number their? Should look
like this <#> in the master slide

No we did not see them. But I figured out..that the Preserve Master was
checked and was why the Items were greyed out. Once that was unselected, we
were able to uncheck and re-check the boxes, which made the place holders
re-appear. Thanks for your help. Sometimes I think they like to make it
difficult.
