Page numbers stay, chapter numbers disappear (in footer) when reop

Page numbers stay, chapter numbers disappear (in footer) when document is
reopened.

Everything was fine when saved (all page & corresponding chapter numbers
were present)

Closed document
When reopened, all chapter numbers were gone, corresponding page numbers
still there. When “View†-> Header and Footer ->Format Page Number “Include
Chapter Number†is still selected.

Copied the entire document, excluding last paragraph symbol, pasted into new
document…the chapter numbers show again…save, close & reopen, then they are
gone.

I wonder if styles are automatically updating, and this is causing chapter
numbers to disappear. Choose Tools - Templates and Add-Ins, and see if
Automatically Update Document Styles is checked. If it is, then remove the
check.
