Password protect content editing vs. password protect open document ??

I can imagine two ways of password protection:

a) A Word (2003) document can be opened only after entering a passwort (=reading is not possible
before the password is entered)

b) A Word (2003) document can be opened and read but NOT edited (editing is only possible
after entering the password).

How do I password protect a Word 2003 document for case a) and for case b) ?

If you click on the task pane's title (the menu on the right side of the
window) and click on protect document, you can enforce that restriction for
case B). For A) you can still do the file -> save as -> tools trick.

In Word, press F1, Type password in the search box, press enter. Select
the links to read the answers to A and B

Is this a homework question? Have you looked at the Security tab of Tools |
Options?

Ever looked in Words offline Help for "password" ...? ;-)

Tools | Options | Security is your friend for both cases.

Note: In Word 2003, you have an even finer set of restrictions through
the corresponding Task Pane for case b).

Hi Camille,

Here's where you start. The rest you should be able to figure out by reading the information in the
interface these commands present.

a) Tools/options/Security

b) Tools/Protect document
