Password Protection in Powerpoint 2002

Does anyone know if there is a solution to the following
problem.
Password protected powerpoint files created with ppt 2002
cannot be opened in previous versions (not even read only)
Of course there is the new 2003 viewer but that is not a
real elegant solution either. Does MS have a patch or a
solution? Their knowledge base was pretty much unhelpful.

The only solution that I know of is to remove the password. If you need to
protect the file from modification or copying, you can see the solutions
