password protection

Hello Hertz,

File > Save As. Click the Tools Button in the lower left corner of
the Save As dialog box. Choose General Options and you can set a
protection password (no one without the password can open the file)
or a write reservation password (no one without password can save
changes to the original file).

Please do be aware, there were some problems with Project 2007
password protected files causing difficulties when opened in Project
2003. If you have a need to share the file with 2003 users, I would
not password protect files until you've tested it and made sure the
files do not become corrupt. Test on copies first.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

When I attempt to click on the General Options, the protection password field
is inaccessible. Anybody have any thoughts?

Hi ChrisC,

More information from you would really help. Let's start with:
Version of MS Project
What service pack is applied?
Does this occur on all project files or just one?
Are these "new" project files or ones created in another version?
Do you have read/write access to the file?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hello Juile, or someone else. Julie, you helped me on another password
question by guiding me how to password protect a file. "File > Save As,
click the Tools button (next to the Save button in Project 2007), General
options"

If i do this and save as the SAME FILE NAME to replace the existing file, an
error code 0x8c04001b comes up, and wont save,. As a work around, i save the
file as a different name,,,eg FINANCE2. then i change the original file
(called FINANCE) to say FINANCE3, and then change my new password protected
FINANCE2 file back to FINANCE. Its important i use the same file name as it's
inserted in a master project file, and has interdependancies with other files.

My Question...do you think this is OK to do this way?? do you think its OK
to do the same for my master project file, which is linked to 25 other
projects?? i'm being cautious due to all its links with other projects.
hope this makes sense.
Peter
