Occasionally, when I try to launch Word (2003) it starts to launch but it does not complete. It flashes and the program button on the start bar flashes. There is a notice that virus scan is running (norton 2003). I cannot close the progam, I cannot end program I cannot restart. I must shutdown the PC manually. Dell Dimension 4600, Windows XP Home version.

Start by disabling the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus. If you still have
problems, see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

Disable the Norton AV Office plug-in (from Norton AV). It will not
compromise your security to do so.

Thanks for you help. Could you go into a little description as to the method of removing office plug ins from Norton? Thanks, Mike.

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Systray icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."
