PC Outlook Question

I may have to go over to the dark side and pick up a PC notebook. I
think it will come with Outlook or Outlook Express. I have never really
used one so have some questions.

Does Outlook have something like the Entourage Switch Identity?

Why have I not heard about a PC version of Entourage?

There IS no PC version of Entourage--it is a Mac only application. It falls
sort of between Outlook and Outlook Express in functionality, although some
things in Entourage are better than either.

To my knowledge, Outlook does not have identities, but Outlook Express does.

What can you NOT do on Entourage that is making you want to switch. (just
curious)

But Windows supports multiple users. You could create another account
for another user and setup another e-mail account in Outlook there.
Tedious, but it works,

True, good point.

I like the way Identities work in Entourage, but then again, I'm in the
minority.

Well, identities would definitively be an advantage in Outlook: the app
doesn't allow you to have more than one Exchange account... Identities
would offer a pretty good workaround for that.

It is not an Entourage issue. I am doing some work and they require me
to use their notebook PC. At home I will continue to use the Mac.

Mark,

Me too. At home my wife uses my G4 and I just created an identity for
her and it works perfect. We have the box checked lets you select the
identity you want to use when you launch Entourage. Works perfect for
us.

Wow! you are the first person I've ever heard of that uses Entourage
exactly like me. Cool! Most people when they hear your description go into
this long diatribe why I should be using separate OSX user accounts, blah,
blah, blah. Our method works well for our needs. Period. One user account
is what we like since we share collectively much more than we have
individually (if that makes any sense).

I now have proof that I'm NOT the only one. ;-)

Outlook does provide a way to switch between varying email accounts,
within the same Windows user profile (at least, I think that's what
you're asking).

1. In the Control Panel, open the Mail applet.
2. Click Add and enter the profile name (personal preference).
3. Add a new email account using the required parameters.

To set a password for an Outlook profile (optional):
1. Once you have setup the profile, in the Mail applet, double-click
the desired profile and click on Data Files.
2. Click on the Personal Folders file associated with the account and
click on Settings.
3. Click on Change Password...
4. Leave the Old Password field blank (unless there is an existing
password).
5. Enter the new password and verify.

Note: I have not ever used Outlook Express so I don't know if this
scenario is possible with that client. Hope this helps

Your method works perfectly for people who do not need absolute privacy and
share the same OS user. Separate OS users is what you need for sharing a
computer at a workplace where privacy is needed - surely you wouldn't want
innumerable co-workers to be able to access your private email and files?

There's one other thing though: switching identities is not so simple if you
make a lot of use of other Office apps. Any time you want to switch
identities you have to save all open documents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
and quit them, and also dismiss all Office Reminders and quit Office
Notifications. With Fast User Switching in Tiger and Panther, you don't have
to quit anything. It's _much_ easier. In a situation like you have at home,
you wouldn't even need to require passwords for each user if you don't want
to, so user switching is one quick click and that's it. But if you and your
wife prefer to share all other files and don't want to fuss with Shared User
stuff, etc. I can see why you'd prefer to have just one OS user and use
Entourage identity switching. Most people would find it annoying having to
quit Word each time, though.
