perform query on text field on a form

I hope I will get some suggestion. I am a newbie. I have bounded text xontrol on a form which is blank but I want to compare the value entered to a table outside and if found update just that field. Let me give ypou the rough idea, like..

select forms![selection]![text1] where text1 = dept table.text
but thsi is not working and even Dlookup function also not working.
