Performance Issue

What is the hardware spec that we should prepare for projects that average
have more than a thousand tasks ??
I already tried with 1500 tasks.
I have a performance problem once I saved that project. it does not enough
to 10 minutes and then I have to enforce to stop the process from Windows
Task Manager.
My project professional 2002 running in the Pentium III 1 GHZ with 512 MB
RAM, when I saving the project, the CPU Usage become 100%, and then I have
to wait that state for more than 10 minutes but without any succeed.

Is there anyone had got this problem like me ?

First of all, you need to be a bit more specific. Are these saves to the
hard drive or to the Project Server database? If the latter is the case,
then please describe your setup and the specific actions you're taking. If
you're saving to Project Server, the simplest explanation might be that SQL
logging is enable on the local machine. This would be evidenced by a high
level of local drive activity on a save operation.

Hi Leo,

Gary tells me this could cause you manifold problems if you're using Project
Server. Please ignore the FAQ if that is the case. Sorry for the bum
steer!

Gary,
I saved it to the PROJECT SERVER from my computer (P-III 1 GHZ, 512 MB
Memory) where the Project Server installed in one machine with the SQL
Server + Analysis Server.

The server hardware have similarly spec with my computer, but while I saving
the project with more than 1500 tasks the CPU usage for the SERVER is very
low.

The problem is in my computer NOT in the server machine ,where the CPU
usage for my computer become 100% for more than 10 minutes while I saving
that project.
Is this normal condition or can I improve the performance become less than 5
minute ?

Leo:

It's not normal unless SQL logging is enabled on your local machine.

Gary,
if I save a project with only 100-200 tasks the performance is OK (both in
the SERVER and CLIENT machine).
Can you give more detail solution to improve the save time in the CLIENT
machine for a project with more than 1500 tasks ??
Do you mean I have to run that project in the SERVER MACHINE where it means
I have to install the MS Project Professional in the SERVER MACHINE ?

Leo:

Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator and make sure that tracing isn't set
on. This is the only workstation setting I'm aware of that causes long save
times independent of the network and server. If this isn't the cause of your
issue, then you need to look at your network performance and at what's going
on at the server.

Gary,
I already checked the tracing tab in the ODBC is not set on, both in the
SERVER machine and in the CLIENT machine. I let all settings with default
setting.

I've got more clue: when i save a project without baseline (1500 tasks) the
performance is OK, but after I save the baseline then I click the Save
button the cpu usage in the "Windows Ttask Manager" become 100% again for
more than 5 minutes.
In the "processes" tab of Windows Task Manager the highest CPU usage is the
WINPROJ.EXE application (98-99%).
Can you help me to solve this issue ?

Thks in advance.
