Personal Folder files in Entourage 2004 Personal Folder files in Entourage 2004

We have been using Outlook 2001 (via classic mode) to connect to our
Exchange server. We have mailbox storage limits in place so users have to
archive email they do not want to delete to a Personl Folder file. We are
about to upgrade to Entourage 2004. Does any one know how to create
Personal Folder files (also called PST files in the Windows world) in
Entourage 2004?

Thanks,
Steve Soler

Entourage doesn't support PST files. You can drag folders of mail to the
desktop to create MBOX files, or use the File:Export:Archive feature. Of
course anything stored under the "Folders on my Computer" hierarchy isn't
taking up server space, so that's probably the easiest way to "archive" mail
off of the mail server.

Entourage does not create .psts, which are not actually Personal Folder
files - pst files are the copies on local disks of the Personal Folders on
the Exchange Server in Outlook. Entourage works a different way, where the
Entourage database on local disk includes cached copies of the mail,
contacts and calendars on the Exchange server.

What you can do in Entourage is :

1) copy messages to local folders "On My Computer". You can do that by
simply dragging them there from the Exchange server folders or using "Move"
button which will delete them from the server at the same time. Or delete
them yourself. These messages stay in the Entourage database on local disk
and can be replied to, etc. directly.

2) Make sure all server messages have been downloaded (read), then drag the
server folder itself to your desktop or Finder folder. This makes MBOX
files - text files - and are an excellent way to archive. Then delete from
the server. Any time you might need an archived message you can drag the
..mbox file back into Entourage where it will become a local on-disk folder
(and can be deleted again afterwards).

3) In Entourage 2004, you can now archive all manner of things using
File/Export. This makes .rge files. This is virtually the same type of thing
as Outlook's ,pst files, but structured just for Entourage. It might make
sense to archive mail separately form contacts form calendar, etc. In the
case of mail I think it basically makes .mbox files although possibly
they're more compressed than that - I haven't checked. To re-import them (as
local folders) you'd use Import.... This is probably closest to what you
have in mind.
