Phantom Non-existent Messages Are Menacing (Bad Star Wars Pun....)

Jake Plissken

[Note: I sent this to what may be an older, out-of date Entourage group? I
really don't even know if the group is still active; I'm still trying to get
the hang of this newsgroup stuff. If you've seen this before I apologize!]

Problemo:
I have 11,000 e-mail messages in my various folders, but whenever I do a
search for something in particular by using advanced find or whatever it
says it's looking through 15,500 messages. Where are all these extra
messages? I know I have 11,000 because I went through and added them all up
with the calculator application!

If this has been answered somewhere please feel free to tell me -- I'm new
at using newsgroups and I have no idea how this works yet.

OH BY THE WAY -- I did a search for messages "more than 0 KB" -- I figured
this would be a good way to figure out how many messages I really have --
and sure enough there are 15,500. The weird thing is, the mysterious 4,500
messages are not in any specific folder, according to "advanced search"!
What does this mean and how is that even possible?

Thanks!!

Two possibilities: they're news messages, or you deleted them and they're in
limbo.

To check on the first do an Advanced Search (cmd-opt-F) or custom view for :

Item Types : ˆ Messages (only)

(All Folders)

Criteria:

Specific Header | Newsgroups | Does not exist

Now, do you have 11,000, with those extra 4,000 gone? Or have you still got
them.

If they're gone, you can get rid of news messages just one way:
control-click on the News SERVER icon (Microsoft News Server) and select
Empty Cache. That removes all messages form all newsgroups. You can always
re-load recent ones again if you need them.

If those 4,500 mysterious messages are still there, sort by folder so
they're all at the top or bottom. Shift-click top and bottom of that group
to select all of them, then Delete.

It may make no difference - they may still be there. If not, now Empty
Deleted Items folder. You can do a Compact (Typical Rebuild) to regain the
space if you wish. If they're still there, you have database corruption and
need top do a Rebuild (Advanced Rebuild). Quit Entourage, hold down Option
key at launch and pick the appropriate type of Compact/Rebuild. When you go
back to the custom view/adv find, the messages should be gone.
