pivot table data section defaults to sum or predefined numeric function

using excel 2002 pivot tables i cannot disable the
default option of summarizing data. . . this default
setting does not allow data to be displayed in an "as is"
format.

please help

I don't know of any way to change the default setting for subtotals.
There's sample code here to turn them off in an existing pivot table:

thanks debra. . .but problem is summarizing data that's
not meant to be summarized,when dragging and dropping
fields into the data area. . .

Fields that go into the data area will be summarized. You can use Min or
Max to show a value from the field, instead of a Sum.

However, if you're adding text fields to the data area, the text won't
appear. It will default to a CountOf summary.
