Placing Entourage Data on a File Server

Q

Quinn

I've been trying to find a way to place Entourage user data on a shared
volume, instead of storing on local drives. I've tried Mac aliases and
Unix Symlinks, but neither seems to work.

Has anyone been able to get Entourage to store user data -- including
the email database - on a shared volume?

I knw that Microsoft would like me to use MS Exchange, but it's
overkill in a Mac-only, 5-person office.Thanks in advance.

Aliases work just fine for local drives. I've never tried shared network
drives.
What type of drive is it?? Is it on a Windows server or MacOS??
Are you sharing through smb, WebDAV or AppleTalk??

I tested it and it worked, but I got corrupted databases quite often.
So, I¹m keeping them locally.

The network drive is served by Mac OS Server 10.3.9. Presently, it's using
AFP although it could be switched to something else with a little effort.

Scott -

What was your network drive setup? We've got Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 via AFP.

I already get corrupted databases with the files stored locally (some of the
databases are absurdly large). So how often is "quite often"?

Jim,

About 2-3 times a week too many to use this process.
This was done on a Win2003 server, so your experience may be different with
an Apple server.
Once we get our new XSAN in place, I will test with that setup.
