Have you tried hitting cmd-\ as sson as the splash screen
dissapears? This may (if the timing is right) turn off
the preview pane and so stop the corrupt message from
trying to display.

Yes, I have tried that. The problem is that the splash screen doesn't
actually disappear - it appears and the next thing to happen is that
Entourage unexpectedly quits.

:(

In that case you may be out of luck.

Use the 'remove office' utility to completely remove all office app files &
preferences (it won't touch the MUD folder, but will remove any custom
templates you have set up for word, excel & powerpoint, as well as any
custom dictionaries, so back these up first)

Actually, already did that before I posted to the newsgroup, but with no
luck.
Then, reinstall and apply all updates and try again.

If this doesn't work you are probably out of luck :(

In the end I've had some success. The Microsoft techo I spoke to said that
the only thing left for me to do was search the net for any 3rd party
software that may be of use.

I came across something called Entouraid and ended up purchasing this. I
ran it and was able to retrieve all my lost incoming emails, but none of my
lost sent items. But that's better than the situation I was in! And, well,
I had received a lot more than sent out, so I guess I've recovered between
70%-80% of my lost emails.

If anyone's interested, Entouraid can be found at:

Thanks to everyone for their assistance!

Try trashing your preferences.

Entourage X:

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

That's not going to help Diane, Fleabag has already de-installed and
re-installed. The 'Remove Office' utility will have removed those files.

I came in late on this thread and wasn't aware he had used remove. I do want
to note that there is a difference in dragging Office to the trash and using
Remove Office. If someone is not familiar they might think they have removed
Office when they have not.

For new users, dragging Office to the trash does not remove your
preferences. However, using Remove Office does.
