POP/smtp problems? In need of a more informed opinion than my own...

Out of nowhere yesterday Entourage stopped sending mail. I am
receiving mail correctly, but anything I try to send just hangs out in
my Out box. When I try to close Entourage, it asked me if I am sure I
want to close since there is 'a network operation in progress.' I am
assuming this means that Entourage is sending the mail, its just not
going anywhere. I would assume this is a problem with our provider,
but mine is the only account having issues, and I am the only one using
Entourage. I have deleted my account and set it up again three times
and nothing. All the ports are correct and the settings are where they
should be. Anyone have any idea what else I can try?

Thanks!

Well you could try setting up an account in Mail and trying to send an
e-mail. That should tell you whether the SMTP server is indeed OK
sending e-mails for your account.

You can also use an application to monitor the traffic with the server
(I ussually use Interarchy to do that) but at this point, it might be
overkill,

Thanks so much for the reply, Corentin. I have tried that and Mail
sends them just fine. The reason I switched to Entourage in the first
place was because Mail went all screwy after my provider reset their
servers and I was tired of never knowing if my Mail was working. Now
it seems to have spread.. sigh. :)

As for monitoring traffic with the server, I guess I am not that clear
as to what that would entail. Is it just to see how far the messages
are getting before they are held up (as in, they get to the server, but
can't get out... or they never leave Entourage in the first place?)

Any chance the SMTP is using special settings (authentication, "receive
before send" etc.)??

You would see what the server requests and what Entourage provides. You
would be able to see exactly where Entourage is stuck trying to send the
e-mail (eg: authentication) That's also sometimes more informative than
the generic error messages.

I don't think they ever really get on the server. Entourage would not be
waiting like that if they did. It appears the message is never properly
communicated to the server (or the server fails to acknowledge).
