Port # used by Entourage

Hello all, my company uses MS Exchange and MS Outlook as our main
mailing env. however, I have recently added a PowerMac G5 to this
network and installed MS Office 2004. I expected Entourage to work
seamlessly as it's configuration setup is identical to the Windows
(thank god!) however, I am not able to connect to my mail server.

Our company blocks all the ports be default and enables only the ones
we need. My sys admin says that MS Entourage seems to use a different
port than Outlook and if I know which port needs to be opened then it
might work - is this true. If yes then what's the port on which
Entourage works?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Waiting anxiously.

Regards

Entourage X uses IMAP for e-mail, WebDAV for address book and calendar
synching and LDAP for the GAL.

Entourage 2004 uses WebDAV for mail, AB and calendar and LDAP for GAL.

You need to have the corresponding services and ports open on your
server.

If you are using Entourage 2004, you don;t really have to connect to the
back-end or MAPI server directly. You might be just fine connecting
directly to your OWA (Webmail) server instead. If you can access OWA
through your web browser, you can connect with Entourage 2004.

Thanks for the response Corentin.

I don't have web access to my mail and only use the Exchange server
way. Which services and port do I need to ask my admin to open.

Thanks for the help again.

Well if the ports are not open on the server, I suspect that the
services you need are not active...

You can tell the admin just what I mentioned before:
Entourage X uses IMAP for e-mail, WebDAV for address book and calendar
synching and LDAP for the GAL.

Entourage 2004 uses WebDAV for mail, AB and calendar and LDAP for GAL.

He/She should know what ports to open in either case (and the exact port
also depends on the fact that you use SSL or not).

Hello Corentin, my sys admin seems to need the exact port number which
needs to be opened for this to work. the office network guys are not
familiar with Macs (specially WebDAV) so there's more confusion.

Do you know a way for me to ascertain what port Entourage uses and also
if what needs to be done on the server side to allow WebDAV to work.

We don't have OWA for mails so that option wouldn't work.
Thanks a ton for all the help - it really is frustrating to be the only
Mac guy trying to check mails in the windows world :)

Well it depends on what they decide to use....
WebDAV is the same as Webmail. It works on port 80 for regular http and
443 for https.
Only opening the port is useless unless the service is indeed running on
the server (and I cannot imagine that activating OWA on the server would
not open the proper ports).

No OWA means no WebDAV... That's a serious problem. WebDAV is the
protocol used to access the account through OWA.
If they are worried about security, they could open OWA over SSL
(https), which is secure.

Yeah, I know the feeling :-\
