Position of Signature

Steve Ball

I'm using E. 11.3.6 on a MacBook Pro running 10.4.10. I just replied to an
email, typing a line a text, a carriage return, then "Thanks," and, with the
cursor located after that last comma, selected a signature, which appeared
*above* everything I'd just typed.

This has happened a few times this week, but it doesn't happen every time I
select a signature. Sometimes the signature appears where I want it, after
what I've typed.

This behaviour just started this week; I may have changed a preference
somewhere. Prior to that, the signature _always_ appeared after what I'd
typed. I assumed it appeared at the cursor position, but that's certainly
not always the case now.

Does anybody know how I broke this and, better, how I can fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Steve = : ^ )

Roger, I had read these threads but none of them appears to address my
problem. They're all concerned with getting the signature to appear after
the reply text and not at the bottom of the email.

My preferences are already set to "Place reply at top of message and include
From, Date, ..." and my signature never appears at the bottom of the email.
However, sometimes it appears *above*, rather than below, what I've just
typed, generally a line or two above the cursor position. It hasn't always
been this way. This behaviour just started this week.

Oh if that's the case, please accept my apology.

Are you selecting any text of the body before clicking Reply?

No. I'm just creating a message, typing a bit and, with my cursor at the end
of what I've just typed, selecting a signature which *sometimes* appears
*above* (some of) what I just typed, instead of after it.

Ahhh okay! What you are seeing is normal behavior, believe it or not.
Not to say that it's "correct behavior"... If you ask me, it's a
usability bug. Try placing the cursor smack in the middle of a *word*
and adding the signature, and you'll find the signature inserted right
in the middle of the word! Bad idea.

As a work-around solution, I've gotten myself into the habit of always
clicking at the bottom of a message before applying a signature
manually.

I had an instance this morning where I could see the cursor blinking at the
end of what I'd just typed, yet the signature was inserted two lines higher,
above what I'd just typed. I Undid and selected the signature again but it
still went in the same place and that's *not at the cursor position*, BTW.
I eventually Cut and Pasted it to where I wanted it, then started this
thread.

Good point. Either way, I think it's not good.

The Sig preferences over placement is confusing. See these screenshots that
better explain what each option does.

Thanks Diane. That's an excellent page. I think I must have been seeing the
effects of some corruption somewhere, because I was getting the signature
appearing *above* the text I had just typed which is not supposed to happen
in any of the scenarios on the linked page. I say "was" because it hasn't
happened since this morning. I have my fingers crossed.

I've seen that before too. It's got to be a bug.
