Possible corrupted slide presentation

While working on a PowerPoint slide
presentation "something" happened on the computer and the
next thing I knew both my files (was copying slides from
one presentation to the other)had closed and disappeard.

Now, when I try to open the file presentation an message
appears that says PowerPoint cannot read the file.

Has anyone expereinced this before? If so, and if you
were able to finally open the file, how was that
accomplished?
