Powerpoint 2000 audio problem

I have PP 2000. My audio animations no longer work. Such audio animations like explosion, applause, breaking glass, etc. play in a broken manner. It cuts in and out. This occurs with existing programs and also with any new attempt to animate text or objects with sound. I have WinXP with SP2. Could any of those updates have caused the problem? I did a repair install of Office 2000 and it still works the same.

FWIW. I have made a PP program using .wav files I produced and they play just fine.

That link is for systems that have no sound. As I said in my post my sound
works fine on everything but animation sound. Even there the sound is
present but broken. Like an intermittent connection would sound.
