PowerPoint 2003 magnified pictures?

Why does PowerPoint 2003 inserts only magnified portions of pictures into
presentations?

PPT is actually inserting your picture at full size. If you zoom out on your
slide in edit mode, you will see that the picture is much larger than the
slide itself. You can make the picture smaller in PPT itself and then use
PPT's compression tools to shrink it. Or (a better option), use your
favorite graphic tool to shrink a copy of the picture to the size that will
fit the slide and insert that.
