powerpoint won't open .pps files

I am unable to open files with a .pps extension. Powerpoint gives me a
message stating that it is unable to read this even though it is supposed to
be a powerpoint readable file. One is a document downloaded from microsoft
and powerpoint tells me that it may not be a microsoft file. Any suggestions?

Make sure you have all the updates for your version of PowerPoint
