PPT 2000--design template layers image instead of replacing

I've created a timeline within PowerPoint as part of the slide master for the
title slide in PPT 2000. When I take another presentation and try to apply
the template with the timeline, it layers it over the other information
instead of replacing it. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening! Any
suggestions?
