prefered image formats for powerpoint

am new to passport and am having problems with image formats.

example 1 - have a company logo - its circular and I've used photoshop
elements to get rid of any background -- have saved this in various formats
... jpeg, my standard, restores a back ground giving me an unacceptable white
background as part of the image ... some work (tiff / gif) ..

example 2 - some images have a feathered border - some formats restore a
hard border to the inserted image .. this is rather ugly ... i've yet to
find an acceptable format for inserted a picture with a feathered border

is there a standard image format that doesn't cause the problems I've
experienced?

1- All images are square/rectangular. To create a round, oval, star, etc, image without the background you must make the background all ONE solid color...then make that color transparent (read Help in Photoshop) and then save it as an image file that supports transparency...gif, png...and I forget the other one. JPG's do not support transparency. (ps- have a beer or two when reading PS Help on this..it's confusing)

2- Feathering?...probably caused by 'something' you've done in Photoshop...there can be lots of things that cause this depending on what you've done/not done.

Overall hint when working with images...work with a non-lossy format first..like TIFF or PS's native file format until you are happy with the image...the LAST thing you do is save it as a jpg (which is lossy)- if you keep resaving jpgs you'll end up with a sad lookin' image.
