primary & secondary axis - format labels & positioning

Maureen D.

I've been asked to switch the primary axis with the secondary axis (put
primary on right - secondary on far)....how?
Also, I only want SOME of the axis labels to appear on the axis - not all
(i.e., 10-30, then blank, then 50-100). Any way other than my quick fix of
putting a white block over the area?

Right-click the data series, choose Format Data Series, and go to the Axis
tab. Choose Primary or Secondary there.

Well, you can delete the axis labels from the datasheet, but I don't think
that's usually a good idea. A background-colored box works fine for me. I'd
double-click the box and choose Background from the color fill drop-down,
though. (The background fill option isn't available from the regular paint
bucket icon.)

Dear Echo - thank you for your response but what I need to know is how can I
switch which side the primary & secondary axis sits on? Charts default
primary to left side - secondary to right side - I want to switch them (and
have the data follow accordingly) - I am not trying to plot the data to axis
- I'm trying to switch the axis'. Any ideas?

Right-click the X (horizontal) axis, choose Format Axis. Go to the Scale
tab, and select "value Y crosses at maximum category."

You can add another X axis by going to Chart|Chart Options and then you can
set "value Y crosses at category 1" to put the secondary axis on the left.
Lower the X axis (it will be added to the top by default) by double-clicking
the Y axis, going to Scale, and putting an appropriate value in "category X
crosses at."

This all seems like a lot of trouble, though. Wouldn't it be easier to just
change the scales of the primary and secondary axes and tie the data to the
opposite one?

Yes, you are correct - it would be easier to do it the first way you
recommended. Unfortunately, this involves about 20 charts and the decision
to switch them was made after all the charts were complete so I was trying to
avoid going back in and replotting each category...I appreciate your help
very much!

Aha! In that case, switching the axes might indeed be easier!

Good luck with it.
